What It Is

Last year, Hublot made the bold move of introducing its new tourbillon movement in a watch case made of orange sapphire crystal — this was the Hublot Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic Orange Sapphire. The hue was a world-first for coloured synthetic sapphire, and the latest in a line of coloured sapphire created by the Swiss fine watch brand, which includes black, red, blue and yellow. This year, it launches a follow-up to that brightly coloured model in the hue of the moment and another world-first for sapphire crystal, purple. The new tint is achieved using a composite made of aluminium oxide and chrome.

Powered by Hublot’s first automatic tourbillon movement

The Big Bang Tourbillon Automatic Purple Sapphire is powered by Hublot’s first automatic tourbillon movement, HUB6035. While most tourbillons are manually wound, it is self-winding — with a healthy power reserve of three days to boot. Visually, the movement takes centre stage with a striking design that positions the micro rotor at 12 o’clock to mirror the tourbillon at 6 o’clock. A transparent dial and three bridges made of sapphire further ensure that nothing distracts from HUB6035.

A generous use of sapphire crystal

Measuring 44mm in diameter with a thickness of 14.5mm, this is a big timepiece. Coupled with a case made of purple sapphire crystal (with a matching rubber strap), you can bet it’s not going to go unnoticed.

That said, it is probably a good thing that its wrist presence is not directly proportional to its weight: A generous use of sapphire crystal makes the timepiece feel very light and easy to wear.

Now if some joker tries to say this watch looks like it’s made of plastic? To us, that’s like saying platinum looks like steel — it doesn’t matter if casual observers don’t know what it is, because those who matter, do.
