Hot on the heels of the latest world record-breaking run by the fastest long-distance runner on the planet, Eliud Kipchoge — who wears Nike kicks — comes the Adidas Adizero Prime X Strung. It is the brand’s latest pair of carbon-plated running shoes for the everyman.

With the introduction of last year’s Adizero Prime X, the brand has decided to basically ignore the 40mm foam stack limit set on the soles of road racing shoes by World Athletics. This means that the Prime series, with its towering 50mm foam stack, is effectively banned from competitions.

No matter though: softer, springier shoes providing unparalleled energy transfer with every foot strike work just fine as training kicks for the pros. Or even racing shoes for amateur runners looking to break their personal best timings in marathons.

A step up in running tech

The new Adidas Adizero Prime X Strung builds on that amateur-friendly concept with their pioneering use of the proprietary Strung upper on a racing shoe. This upper was first seen on a concept shoe dubbed Futurecraft.Strung two years back. It is also the first time the upper has gone commercially available since it was announced.

According to the sports brand, the Strung upper is “data-driven” and “coded thread-by-thread”, resulting in “a seamless, lightweight cocoon around the foot”. This provides extra support around the heel and midfoot, while enhancing breathability near the toes. It also comes as an entire piece, without separate parts.

Says Simon Lockett, Category Director of Racing Footwear: “The ADIZERO Prime X Strung is a testament to our ongoing commitment to produce the most forward-thinking products for our running community. No design limitations and no reservations. The result is a shoe that delivers an optimal running experience for those looking to smash their next race.”

Other innovations that remain include three layers of Lightstrike Pro foam surrounding carbon rods and a carbon plate at the heel of the shoe. Both technologies, working in tandem, store energy as your foot hits the ground, releasing and enhancing the kick-off of your next stride. This results in higher efficiency, leading to better runs and a higher chance of smashing those PBs when it matters.

It is available online for S$400 in a number of colours via Adidas’ website.
