Dreaming of another sun-drenched holiday in Greece or Italy, sipping on wine in a luxurious villa overlooking azure seas?

Capture the essence of coastal living and bring it into your own abode with Mediterranean-inspired home design.

“What is great about Mediterranean elements is that they are bright, come in a variety of materials and offer plenty of textures to play with. At the same time, they are classic enough to never go out of style,” says Mr Angelo Meroni, President of Italian luxury furniture brand Lema which is known for its walk-in wardrobes and made-to-measure pieces.

Lema’s latest Made in Italy 2023 collection, unveiled recently at Salone del Mobile, Milan’s largest furniture fair, features contemporary new designs and eco-sustainable furnishings that can elevate any home into a Mediterranean retreat. You will be able to view the collection at W.Atelier, a purveyor of luxury home furnishings and accessories, later this year.

As a company, Lema’s long-standing commitment to sustainability shines through their choice of materials, production processes and disposal methods, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

Here, we spotlight Lema’s key pieces that will help you create a personal space that exudes coastal-living vibes, along with expert design tips.

Illuminate your living room with a bright and breezy ambiance

When it comes to Mediterranean-style homes, there’s nothing quite like basking in natural light and embracing the breezy ambiance it brings.

A key tip from Mr Meroni: “Pick light colours such as neutrals and creams to lighten your space. Combine them with natural materials such as woods, clays and stones or lacquered glass to give the environment more character and personality without weighing it down.”

Lema’s Soffio living room collection, comprising sofas and armchairs, captures that light and airy feel while prioritising eco-friendliness. The collection’s soft seats are filled with a fibre made from recyclable and recycled materials, while upholstery options include low-environmental-impact fabrics like Ofelia, made from GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certified recycled cotton, and Ariel, a chenille made with recycled PET yarn.

The Soffio collection comes in a range of neutral cream, beige and grey shades, plus three finishes – fabric, leather and synthetic leather.

“The best part, they are designed to be easily transported and easily disassembled for correct disposal at the end of their life cycle, in complete respect for the environment,” says Mr Meroni.

For a well-rounded living room experience, consider Lema’s Niveaux modular sofa, offering versatile configurations in fresh and youthful styles. Complement the seating arrangement with the dynamic and geometric Drum coffee tables and poufs, designed to add a touch of elegance to your space.

Streamline clutter with multi-functional storage

In creating a serene Mediterranean-inspired home, it is essential to maximise space and eliminate clutter.

Mr Meroni advises selecting furniture and storage solutions that are not only functional but also multi-purpose, providing ample storage options to keep your home organised.

For instance, Lema’s VentiTre walk-in wardrobe offers a modular and highly customisable solution that combines aesthetics, functionality and sustainability. With a wide range of elements and accessories to choose from, you can tailor the VentiTre system to suit your specific needs and personal style. Plus, its eco-friendly design and materials ensure that you don’t have to compromise sustainability for style.

“The VentiTre system is known for its materials inspired by nature and a high level of attention to detail, both from a tactile and a visual point of view,” explains Mr Meroni. “It has a completely ecological panel made from 100 percent carefully selected recycled wood, glass, and aluminium.”

To further streamline clutter and add a touch of sophistication to your home, consider the Lema Eureka bar cabinet which is equipped with a retractable trolley or the Lina console that boasts a sleek and minimalist profile.

Mix natural materials for an opulent feel

To fully embrace the spirit of the Mediterranean, it is crucial to incorporate natural materials such as wood, stone and glass into your home decor.

“I always suggest mixing materials, for example, marble with lacquered finishes in order to create the right balance that can enrich the space without overwhelming it.

“You can also try fabric, leather, glass, wood and marble, in various shades and colour intensity for a sensational contrast,” says Mr Meroni.

When it comes to seamlessly combining different materials and finishes, Lema’s Lena wardrobe stands out as a remarkable example. This exquisite wardrobe merges glossy and matte lacquered bright colours with neutral woods and clay to create unique and bold looks.

Designed by renowned Italian architect Piero Lissoni, the Lena not only showcases impeccable craftsmanship but also meets specific functional needs with its range of drawer units, trouser racks, belt holders, shoe racks, shelves and bars.

With its recessed handles, the Lena wardrobe achieves a seamless and sleek finish, adding a touch of sophistication to your living space while maintaining its practical functionality.

Evoke serenity in the bedroom with gentle shapes

Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of relaxation and tranquillity. To establish a soothing atmosphere, incorporate soft and rounded shapes that help to evoke a sense of serenity and calm.

Furthermore, consider select materials and finishes that exude warmth and comfort to further enhance the overall ambiance of your bedroom.

The Lullaby collection by Lema, which features a bed, chest of drawers and bedside tables, exemplifies these qualities.

“As its name reveals, the upholstered Lullaby bed’s full intent is to lull people to sleep with its soft and enveloping effect enhanced by its padding.

“The entire collection is characterised by gentle and harmonious shapes, ideal to create a peaceful atmosphere,” adds Mr Meroni.

The Lullaby bed is also finished with a blanket stitch, giving it a light and ethereal appearance as if it is suspended and floating mid-air, further enhancing its relaxing vibe.

These pieces can be customised to suit your personal style and the dimensions of your space, allowing you to create a truly personalised and intimate bedroom retreat.
