The Peak has met many stylish men, but none with as extensive a wardrobe as Marco Ficarelli. Since 2014, the Italian chief revenue officer of Orveon Global, which owns premium cosmetics brands BareMinerals, Laura Mercier, and Buxom, has been based in Singapore, where he clearly has built up a formidable sartorial arsenal.

He has over 50 bespoke summer jackets in his wardrobe at home, and a much larger collection in an air-conditioned warehouse in Toa Payoh. He also owns more than a thousand tailored shirts, over 400 pairs of shoes, and drawers of accessories, ranging from ties and pockets squares to cufflinks and lapel pins.

Somehow, there is also space for his scarves, hats and watches. This vast and growing collection is also constantly being curated: Ficarelli gifts certain pieces to relatives, while archiving timeless classics and items of sentimental value.

Dress to impress from a young age

Ficarelli cuts a striking figure with his toned physique, salt-and-pepper hair, and a ready and radiant smile. Rather than a way to stand out, dressing up is his way of expressing himself.

The son of a hotelier and restaurateur father who dresses to impress, and a mother who taught tailoring and made Ficarelli his first suit when he was just 12, he developed an eye for elegance from a young age.

Among his style icons are Italian industrialist Giovanni Agnelli, from whom Ficarelli copied a distinctive ’70s popover shirt design for his wardrobe, Prince Charles with his double-breasted suits, and Tom Ford with his subtle detailing. “Each is famous for something in their own style, and I look to them for inspiration rather than copying the way they dress.”

“I am passionate about style and good taste — not fashion, which is often transient and limiting,” he shares. “What I wear tells my story. A colourful scarf, or a hand-crocheted flower pin on the lapel, they express my happiness.” If you look closely at his shirts, you might also notice whimsical embroidered details telling of his heritage: a bunch of grapes or a cactus native to his hometown, Puglia.

A passion for craftsmanship

His collection also shows his passion for craftsmanship. “I like to personalise my items and enjoy working with master tailors to make a piece special,” he says. “The process is huge fun, but the biggest enjoyment comes from wearing them. Because it represents creative collaboration mastery, it gives me satisfaction.” He began by tailoring his wedding suits, working with Isaia — a Neapolitan menswear brand founded in 1920 — to create the perfect outfit, including low-waisted tuxedo trousers and a slimmer, more elegant cut for the jacket. “Mind you, this was way before slim fit was in vogue!”

But to dress well doesn’t mean dressing expensively. As somebody from the beauty industry, I believe that one looks good when they feel good. It’s about confidence.

Ficarelli went on to create other items: from jackets hand-stitched from a single piece of fabric by G. Inglese, an Italian heritage tailor that has crafted pieces for Prince William, to custom shoes from Jermyn Street in London, and made-to-measure spectacle frames from Maison Bonnet in Paris. “I try to discover something special wherever I travel. Just last month, I spent an entire afternoon picking out all sorts of unique, hand-made buttons from an amazing store in New York.”

He reflects, “My job requires me to represent my company in the world of beauty, and to project both the professional side and the luxurious side of our business. In a sense, dressing becomes a wordless language, especially when meeting people of different cultures and backgrounds. But to dress well doesn’t mean dressing expensively. As somebody from the beauty industry, I believe that one looks good when they feel good. It’s about confidence.”
