[Photos] 7 ultra-slim watches that make an elegant statement
It might be a while before ultra-slim watches actually come close to being paper-thin, but their forms are certainly slender enough to fit into slight spaces - while retaining a presence that can fill a room.
01: JUST FINE
Currently the world’s thinnest automatic watch with a thickness of just 5.15mm, the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Automatic has a sandblasted, eight-sided titanium case that gives it a cool industrial vibe and sets it apart from other ultra-slim time-tellers. A seconds subdial at eight o’clock adds interest to this time-only watch.
02: NEW CHAPTER
Panerai watch dials have long been famously minimalist, a quality that until now has not applied to their girth. The Luminor Due (“two” in Italian) pieces see the brand trimming the thickness of its cases, with the PAM 677 model shown here having the thinnest Luminor case ever created. Just 10.5mm thin and 42mm in diameter, this red gold timepiece sets highly legible time displays against an anthracite sunburst dial.
03: MOTORING ON
This year, Cartier continues powering up its Drive de Cartier cushion-shaped family with models such as the Extra-Flat. Less than 7mm thick and 39mm wide, it’s an elegant addition to this masculine, all-occasions watch range. Available in pink gold (shown here) or white gold, the Drive de Cartier is powered by a manual-winding movement.
04: SAXON SUBTLETY
A. Lange & Sohne makes some of the most nuanced luxury timepieces you’ll fi nd on the market, and the 5.9mm-
thick Saxonia Thin in white gold is a prime example of this subtlety. The time-only watch features a solid-silver dial with elegant hour markers and hands, and a manually wound in-house movement, housed in a 40mm case. This watch also comes in a smaller size of 37mm.
05: A COOL TWIST
Chopard’s L.U.C XPS Twist QF Fairmined charmingly brings together slender refinement and edgy texture courtesy of its unique dial, which has a specially stamped sunburst finish inspired by raw gold nuggets. This dial pattern is the signature of Chopard’s Fairmined pieces, which use certifi ed ethical gold. The 7.2mm-thick and 40mm-wide case is crafted from ethical rose gold.
06: HUGE SUCCESS
Over the past couple of years, Audemars Piguet has been putting the spotlight on its handsome yellow gold, using the precious metal in its latest take on the Royal Oak Extra-Thin Selfwinding, also known as the Jumbo (despite its relative slimness, its 39mm diameter made it a large watch in the ’70s). Powered by the ultra-thin automatic manufacture Calibre 2121, the new Jumbo has a decidedly un-jumbo-ish thickness of 8.1mm and retains its classic diameter of 39mm.
07: GOLDEN RULE
First unveiled in 1968, the Golden Ellipse by Patek Philippe has an aesthetic that is both vintage and yet totally fresh in its uniqueness. Powered by Patek’s ultra-slim automatic Calibre 240, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, the Golden Ellipse Ref. 3738/100R has a thickness of 5.65mm. Measuring 35.6mm in length and 33.7mm in width, the rose gold timepiece might be slight in size, but is no less striking for it.
