Hublot and Nespresso's collaborative watch, the Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin.

Many Nespresso drinkers out there dutifully send their used capsules for recycling — but most probably do not give much thought to what happens to those little aluminium pods thereafter. Well, aside from reusing the tough and lightweight metal for new capsules, Nespresso has also worked to showcase more exciting possibilities by partnering with upmarket Swiss brands since 2016.

As part of the brand’s Second Life campaign, its recycled coffee capsules have found their way into products such as Caran d’Ache 849 ballpoint pens, Victorinox Swiss army knives and a bicycle by Velosophy.

Now, these capsules have been reborn into their most high-end second life yet. The Hublot Big Bang Unico Nespresso Origin marks the new partnership between the two well-known Swiss brands. Recycled aluminium, comprising 28 per cent Nespresso capsules, makes up the watch’s 42mm case, bezel, pushers and crown — which is engraved with Nespresso’s N logo. The sapphire caseback has a frame made of recycled Eco-Titanium.

In line with the summery colours — including purple and turquoise — that Hublot has used for its other aluminium Big Bang Unico watches, the aluminium used for this 200-piece limited edition is anodised in a vibrant, verdant green, reminiscent of Nespresso’s Master Origins Peru Organic capsule. (We are partial to Nespresso’s Ristretto blend ourselves, but we have to admit that the black capsules they come in would not have been particularly novel as inspiration for Hublot, the master of the all-black timepiece.)

That’s not where the sustainability aspect ends. Look closely and you’ll see the speckled finish of the rubber strap. Part of that is recycled coffee grounds from Nespresso capsules. This makes up 4.1 per cent of the rubber strap, which is also 8.2 per cent recycled rubber.

An accompanying second fabric strap — easily interchangeable with the rubber one thanks to the brand’s One Click interchangeable strap system — is made of fully recycled fabric comprising 5 per cent coffee grounds and 95 per cent recycled polyester. It took a year, apparently, to ensure the colour uniformity of the seven different materials that make up the various parts of this watch.

Closing the circularity loop, the self-winding chronograph timepiece, which is powered by Hublot’s HUB1280 in-house movement, is presented in the brand’s new Greenbox case. Made from oak that has been responsibly sourced, the box also features removable interior components that are largely made from recycled or eco-friendly materials. Whew. For Hublot fans, this timepiece is another fresh option to consider. And for those who aren’t, this unique new release will probably provide even more impetus to send back those used Nespresso pods for recycling.
