Strap interchangeability has become increasingly popular in the watch world, with a multitude of brands introducing quick-switch functions in recent years. But way before it became common for a watch-wearer to be able to switch a leather strap to a metal bracelet simply by flicking a clasp, Panerai was the first to encourage DIY strap-switching by including, with its watches, customised tools for doing so.
As a result, strap-swapping has become a major part of Paneristi culture, and aftermarket custom straps made for Panerai watches are an industry in themselves. Unsurprisingly though, Panerai itself also offers a staggering spectrum of straps and buckles to choose from.
Now, the brand has launched its first dedicated space for its accessories, located within its Canton Road flagship boutique in Hong Kong. Located on the eighth floor of the boutique — the 202-sq-m store is the largest owned by the brand — the Watch Accessories Room showcases up to 670 straps and bracelets, a full range of buckles, and an interactive strap display. It’s a wonderland for collectors looking to give their Radiomirs and Luminors a fun and fast facelift: After all, as all watch fans know, a strap change is the fastest way to feel like you have a new watch, without actually buying a new timepiece (not that we’re stopping you from doing so).
The space is accented with oak and burnished brass, with a decorative display that stands out immediately: The Torpedo showcase is a reference, of course, to Panerai’s well-known history as a supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Navy. For the Panerai fan, this is another destination to add to your to-visit list when we can freely hop over to Hong Kong once more.
