Getting recognition and support has never been a cakewalk for local fashion designers, and the Covid-19 situation will certainly not prove helpful in this regard. Enter the Textile and Fashion Federation (Taff) and the launch of its flagship initiative, the Singapore Stories design competition. Nine fashion designers will produce designs inspired by the past, present and future of  Singapore identity. “In these challenging times, the local fashion industry is struggling with the Covid-19 pandemic. Taff recognises this, and the increased need to create platforms and opportunities for promising designers.” says Perng Aw, the marketing and events director of Taff.

The semi-finalists were shortlisted by a panel of experienced fashion professionals in Taff’s network. Candidates were asked to submit initial sketches for their Singapore Stories capsule collection, and were selected based on their engagement with the theme, design aesthetic, creative inspirations and growth potential. Over the coming months, the nine designers will create capsule collections that will be presented to a judging panel of industry leaders. During this time, each designer will have access to consultants and mentors from a spectrum of fields, including design, retail, commerce, and media.

In September, five finalists will be selected to present on the runway at the Asian Civilisations Museum. The winner will get to showcase their work at the Asian Civilisations Museum’s Contemporary Gallery, be stocked by multi-label store SocietyA, and present their collection at Paris Fashion Week during the Fall 2021 show season.
