A new venue, fresh approaches, and an All-Asian designer line-up: On Wednesday, Singapore Fashion Week 2016 kicked off at the National Gallery with a show by Chinese couturier Guo Pei. Best known for creating the ultra-elaborate cape dress that singer Rihanna wore to the 2015 Met Gala, Guo is the first Chinese designer to be a guest member of the prestigious Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.

Blending refined maximalism and Chinese-inspired touches (think elaborate embroidery generously studded with crystals, and wedge heels with etched patterns resembling those of traditional sculptures), the designer’s Spring/Summer 2016 Couture collection was first presented in Paris earlier this year. We are glad to have had the opportunity to view the collection up close here on our shores: There’s nothing like being an outstretched hand away from her designs to really appreciate the amount of details – the sparkling embroidery on a trailing cape, the swish of feathers on the hem of a floral-applique dress, the shimmering movement of tiered wisps of silvery fabric of a wedding gown.

Here are our top 10 looks from the collection.
