This is the first instalment of our five-part Watch Trend Report 2022 series on the top trends in horological releases so far this year.

Horology is keeping pace with the world as it makes a careful transition into a post-pandemic era. With people resuming travel, for instance, the world-time function is resurfacing as a popular complication. On the other hand, certain tropes that have come to the fore in recent years — think green dials and historical reissues — continue to ride the wave of popularity.

To kickstart this series, The Peak takes a look at green dial watches.

As one theory goes, the seeds of our collective passion for the colour green were planted at the height of the pandemic, when we were all cooped up and craving the great outdoors. This year, even as the world reopens and people get to immerse themselves in as much nature as they want, green continues being a dominant dial colour. And considering how good the hue looks on a variety of timepieces, whether they are sporty or sophisticated, it’s a chromatic choice that isn’t going away anytime soon.

1. Chopard - L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer

1/5

We were fans of the L.U.C XPS 1860 Officer when it launched in 2017 with a silvered dial and white gold case. With its forest-green dial and 40mm yellow gold case, the latest iteration is just as compelling. Made of solid gold, the dial features a hand-guilloche honeycomb motif, which is repeated on the hinged caseback. The inside of the back cover features yet another engraving, this one being a beehive with bees, a historical Chopard symbol.

2. IWC - Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition “Woodland”

2/5

This year, IWC created two new ceramic colours for its Top Gun pilot’s chronographs, inspired by the US Navy uniforms and the training grounds of naval aviators. So dark that it looks almost dark grey in some lighting, Woodland Green is the colour of the 44.5mm ceramic case of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Top Gun Edition “Woodland” as well as its dial, hands, rubber strap and textile inlay, and lume.

3. Jaeger-LeCoultre - Polaris Date

3/5

This watch was only available on Jaeger- LeCoultre's e-commerce channels for a month following its launch in May. Now, it is a boutique exclusive. The limited number of sales platforms should give you a sense of how confident the brand is in its green- dialled Polaris Date. The lacquered, gradient dial characterises the latest edition of the 42mm sporty steel timepiece, launched in 2018 with a design inspired by the alarm-equipped Memovox Polaris from 1968.

4. Panerai - Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel

4/5

Used to make the 44mm cases of the Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteel models, Panerai’s eSteel contains a good amount of recycled metal. For us, however, that's not the most compelling feature of this trio of new timepieces. What captures our attention are their dials, which come in green, grey or blue, and have a gradient finish that gets deeper from top to bottom. In matching hues, polished ceramic bezels perfectly frame these faces.

5. Patek Philippe - Ref. 5205R Annual Calendar

5/5

At the Watches and Wonders Geneva fair in March, Patek Philippe presented three new models with dials in green, a colour whose popularity shows no signs of abating. Our favourite? The Ref. 5205R Annual Calendar, which contrasts a 40mm rose gold case with a dark olive green sunburst dial. A hand-patinated olive green alligator strap completes the colour scheme.
