The best luxury holiday experiences to tick off your travel bucket list

Here’re three off-the-beaten-path holiday ideas that involve a primal feast in the Scottish Highlands and a jaunt through the wreckage of the Titanic.

by Richard Ng  /   August 28, 2022

Travel pundits are calling 2022 a watershed year for international tourism. After spending two years in lockdown, explorers no longer settle for the second best or budget-friendly option – they want to tick items off their bucket lists as soon as possible.
Whether that manifests in a two-week sojourn at a far-flung luxury resort, or a trip to the furthest reaches of our planet, we’ve got you covered.

Here are three travel destination ideas for the gourmand, young at heart or intrepid explorer.

The best luxury holiday experiences to tick off your travel bucket list
1. Open-fire cooking experience with chef Francis Mallmann in the Scottish Highlands
image

Legendary Argentine chef Francis Mallmann is best known for proving his mettle in Michelin-starred French restaurants, before making a dramatic about-turn towards the rustic, open-fire cooking characteristic of his Patagonian roots. Now, you can get a chance to learn from the master of fire himself during a six-day outing in the Scottish Highlands.

Naturally, daily fireside chats – and the chef fire-driven feasts – are included in the travel itinerary, as does clay pigeon shooting, whisky tasting and guided hikes around the bucolic magnificence at Alladale Wilderness Reserve in northern Scotland. The experience, limited to a group of 16 at a go, starts from £29,920 (S$49,985) per room.

2. A private jet adventure across all of Disney’s theme parks

24 days, six countries and 15 destinations – a dozen of which are Disney’s theme parks around the world. The adventure of a lifetime, limited to just 75 fans of the House of Mouse, includes luxury accommodations and a VIP-configured Boeing 757 operated by Icelandair to whisk said fans from Anaheim to Tokyo (and every Disney park in between).

They’ll also find time to stop by at landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Taj Mahal. You’ll even get the chance to stay at the idyllic Summit Skywalker Ranch. Besides rearing Wagyu cattle and producing olive oil and honey, the ranch is also home to the legendary campus of Skywalker Sound, which is responsible for LucasFilm’s incredible sound design. The trip is all-inclusive – so you won’t have to factor meal costs into your ticket price of US$109,995 (around S$151,300).

Expedition to the Titanic wreck
image

The Titanic is quite possibly the most famous seafaring vessel in existence, and its ill-fated collision with an iceberg and subsequent sinking is now a legend in history. Less than 250 people have managed to physically feast their eyes upon the sombre site of its sunken, rusting hull and the surrounding debris, which makes OceanGate Expedition’s 2022 trip (following the success of last year’s inaugural outing for tourists) all the more special.

After all, you’ll be part of a crew, including researchers, marine biologists and scientists, collecting vital data on the wreck that will be passed down in history. Think sonar and laser scans to assess the ship’s condition as it decays in the depths of the North Atlantic Ocean, as well as documentation of marine life that sprung up in the wake of the tragic accident. The price tag for a seat on this expedition? A cool US$250,000 (S$343,900).
