Electric vehicles (EVs) are no longer a curiosity for the eco-conscious. The steady implementation of electric chargers around the island, and changing consumer sentiments – largely spurred by marques looking to bring class or machismo to the EV market – have in turn led to a jump in registrations for electric vehicles.

Some 8.4 per cent of all new car registrations in the first five months of this year were EVs, reported The Straits Times – more than twice of that in 2021, and over 20 times as many compared to two years ago.

And while purchasing a car might not be top of mind right now (thanks to sky-high prices for car-buying certificates), it never hurts to keep an eye out for what’s buzzing in the world of EVs – especially since purchasing an electric car would net you a hefty rebate.

Here are four vehicles to consider if you’re on the market for an all-electric automobile.

1. BMW i4 M50

BMW’s first all-electric M vehicle has reached our shores. As is befitting of BMW’s M line, expect performance to be at the centre of all things. This comes by way of twin electric motors, pumping out an impressive 544hp for a top-end speed of 225kmh and a 3.9 second race to a hundred; as well as a suite of rider-focused design touches like a sporty body kit, M Sport brakes and suspension, and surround- sound system that recreates the throaty roar of a conventional petrol engine. All this, for up to 510km – plenty for round-island cruising.

2. Tesla Model Y

We’d be remiss to talk about electric vehicles and leave out one of its forerunners – Tesla, a marque instrumental to making EVs, well, cool. Which is why we think the glass-roofed Tesla Model Y is a sports utility vehicle worth considering: it’s a roomy five-seater that – when one opts for the dual-motor, all-wheel performance package – yields a nasty century sprint of 3.7 seconds and sizable 514km range, along with all the usual bells and whistles you’d expect from a Tesla like autopilot and active safety features.

3. Mercedes EQS 450+

Mercedes

Mercedes’ electric-focused EQ arm, not to be outdone, have unveiled an altogether different beast: meet the EQS, the brand’s attempt at cornering the market for eco-luxury in automobiles. The stunning saloon delivers on both fronts with aplomb – an industry-leading aerodynamic profile lends itself to a whisper-quiet drive, backed up by a whopping 762km of range on a full charge. Other luxurious touches include a continuous, arch-esque design that runs seamlessly from front to end; a full suite of sensor- enabled safety features; as well as an optional, swishier, twin-motor option that delivers – apart from even better power production and ultra-responsive driving thanks to dynamic brake recuperation – an upgrade on its infotainment system by way of a pillar-to-pillar hyperscreen (what’s essentially three touchscreens combined into one).

4. Polestar 2

A rising star in Singapore, the Polestar 2 is an all-electric beauty you'd want to look out for. The brainchild of Volvo and Geely, Polestar has made its debut in Singapore with the Polestar 2 last December. While the brand may be new to the electric segment, it's not shy in quality and performance. On the outside, the striking design turns heads and is praised by many. Forget your EV range woes — the Polestar 2 features a long-range dual electric motor that completes the century sprint in 4.7 seconds, and an estimated range of 480km.
