One man’s junk is another’s treasure. That’s what Carlo Pessina, founder of the eponymous Italian furniture brand, proved when he recycled coconut shells to use as a sustainable resource, in the face of inconsistent supplies of the usual carpentry materials. The durable medium has remained a mainstay in pieces like the Buru Sofa from Pessina’s latest collection, which combines light coconut and yellow pen shell for its exterior and is coated with lacquer for a glossy sheen.
