The original film – which stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Awkwafina, Nico Santos, Lisa Lu, Ken Jeong, and Michelle Yeoh – follows a young Asian-American woman who travels to meet her boyfriend's family and is surprised to find that they are one of the richest families in Singapore.
For director Jon M. Chu, who previously shared about how he wanted the movie to highlight the commercial viability of Asian-centered movies to Hollywood honchos, his vision of doing just that seems to be well on its way to fruition.
The sequel – which already has original helmer Jon M. Chu attached again to direct – also plans to reteam with the producers of the first film, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force and John Penotti of Ivanhoe; and will be penned by the same screenwriters of Crazy Rich Asians Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim – although the deals have not yet been set.
While Warner Bros. has not yet officially green-lighted the sequel, the studio is reportedly moving forward on development, with the second film to be titled and based on Kevin Kwan's follow-up book to Crazy Rich Asians – China Rich Girlfriend.
