After the wave of Barbie pink, micro-shorts, ballet flats and cozy styles that topped fashion trends in 2023, it's time for more extravagance, a touch of vintage and a healthy dose of fun in 2024. That's what emerges from Pinterest's annual predictions report for the year ahead, based in particular on searches by the 482 million people who use the platform to find inspiration in various sectors, including fashion and beauty.
These predictions confirm, in part, the trends unveiled by the major fashion houses and designers at the spring-summer 2024 shows held in New York, London, Milan and Paris.
Grandpa, fashion influencer
The fashion and beauty industries are constantly drawing on influences from the past, but the last two years have seen a particular focus on grandma, along with her wardrobe and her many natural remedies. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the younger generations have embraced knitting, crocheting and many trends straight out of our grandmothers' wardrobes, such as the 'coastal grandmother' aesthetic that continues to make waves on social networks (nearly 580 million views on TikTok).
But 2024 could see this change. According to the Pinterest Predicts report, it's no longer grandma, but grandpa who will influence fashion with retro pieces as cool as they are stylish, as recently spotted on the catwalks of Fendi, Loewe, Dior, Amiri, Givenchy, or Botter.
In practice, this should mean a return to clothes and accessories from another age — although some are considered timeless — such as corduroys, berets and cardigans. According to data shared by the social platform, searches for 'grandpa style' have already increased by 60%, while those for 'retro streetwear' and 'grandpa core' by 55% and 65% respectively.
There's also a strong craze for personalized denim jackets, which Pinterest is linking to this trend, with a 355% increase in searches for this category.
Big jewelry and metallics
Oversized designs and volume will also be the order of the day in the fashion and beauty worlds. This will mean a return to perming and "big" hairstyles in the hair sector, but also — and above all — to imposing, even oversized jewelry. This trend was seen on the catwalks of Calcaterra, Moschino, Carolina Herrera, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Schiaparelli and LaPointe during last year's Fashion Month. According to Pinterest's predictions, this will be confirmed in 2024 with 'chunky hoops' (+45% of searches) and sculptural jewelry (+75%).
While red is set to be the star color of 2024, metallic shades will also be popular, dominated by silver. Metallic corsets (+35%), silver-plated necklaces (+50%) and metallic nail art (+295%) will be particularly popular next year, for example. The recent runway shows show that metallic hues will also make their mark in fashion, as seen at Carolina Herrera, Diesel, LaQuan Smith, Chloé, Courrèges, Paco Rabanne, Dion Lee and Gabriela Hearst.
When it comes to accessories, bows stand out in a romantic, even boho-chic spirit. Although they haven't (yet) made their mark on the Fashion Week catwalks, which opted for minimalist fashion for Spring/Summer 2024, Pinterest is nonetheless elevating them to the top of the trends across all segments, from outfits with bows (+190%) to necklaces with bows (+180%) to crochet bows (+80%) and heels with bows (+40%).
