Trendy cafes, fashion and beauty stores, and buzzing night markets are part and parcel of South Korea’s irresistible appeal. Think mouth-watering baked goods at Cafe Onion and trigger-happy shopping sprees at Olive Young.

However, with a growing number of wellness sanctuaries in Seoul and beyond, there is a slower-paced and lesser-known side to the country for those seeking a reset.

While Phuket and Bali have long been the more common go-tos for a whirlwind weekend trip to detox and destress, Korea’s brilliant healing therapies and stunning flora and fauna are excellent reasons to deviate from the usual.

These hidden gems include luxury retreats that employ a rich tradition of holistic health practices, from the therapeutic benefits of aged red ginseng to ancient tea therapy rituals.

Then there are abundant nature parks – like the Yeongnam Alps with beautiful peaks and meandering lakes, and Seogwipo Healing Forest’s magnificent cypress and cedar trees – that offer another way to embrace the country’s restorative side.

The best part? You can also plan for a few days in the city, before retreating to a wellness sanctuary to unwind and relax.

To fully experience Korea’s wellness offerings, start with these top retreats, ancient healing therapies and nature sanctuaries:

Nestled in the mountain ranges of Hongcheon in Gangwon Province, Healience Seonmaeul is a postcard-worthy resort all-year round – and only a two-hour drive from Seoul.

In summer, the lush trees surrounding the property are a deep, verdant green, while in winter, it turns into a glacial wonderland. Rooms are earth-toned and minimalist, and are designed with large floor-to-ceiling windows for guests to enjoy its peaceful vistas.

No television sets, air-conditioners and smartphones are allowed here – instead, you are encouraged to delve into a flexible routine of yoga, meditation, exercise and walks. Trainers gently weave staircase climbing or stretching into your routine, which you can easily incorporate once you are back home.

Complete with wholesome meals, and daily visits to its nutrient-rich carbonated springs and red clay jimjilbang (a Korean sauna), the ultimate aim is to emerge refreshed and a better version of yourself.

Improve well-being with the benefits of ancient red ginseng treatments

Ginseng is the prized ingredient at SPA 1899, where practitioners utilise six-year-old red ginseng in all its treatments. Women from the Joseon period often put ginseng in their bathwater as they believed it kept their skin fair and smooth.

To help improve heart health, blood circulation and increase energy levels, hit up their red ginseng spa room. This is where guests are able to enjoy the full benefits of concentrated red ginseng through a water massage, heat or steam. Targeted treatments for your head and feet are also available in both their Seoul and Busan locations.

Ease anxiety with therapeutic water treatments

A 90-minute flight from Seoul is the scenic island of Jeju, home to the majestic Hallasan National Park. A Unesco biosphere reserve site, its shield volcano is the highest in the country, while its surrounding forest landscape boasts mesmerising views.

The chic health resort also focuses on comprehensive health checkups, healing programmes and forest bathing – an experience which relies on phytoncides to reduce anxiety.

Unlock better sleep and health benefits through personalised tea rituals

It’s believed that tea has a unique ability to help prevent colds, as well as improve blood circulation and various skin conditions. Hyangtongcha is worth a try for tired eyes or sore shoulders, while ginseng tea helps you sleep better.

Their Stress-Free blend contains mint, which clears the mind and prevents indigestion. Guests are also welcome to soak their tired limbs in a warm herbal foot bath outside the house, while sipping on their favourite teas.
