A River Valley penthouse’s ultimate glamorous hospitality

Stepping inside this penthouse condominium apartment in River Valley feels like arriving in a stately luxury hotel suite. It is precisely the feeling that the homeowners Kenneth, and interior designer Adrian Heng of SpaceOne Interior Design Consultancy aimed for.

“It’s glamorous and timeless, with some bling, modern and art deco elements. But it’s not over the top, and it’s just right for entertaining,” describes Adrian, who met the client through a friend’s recommendation.

The 10-year-old freehold apartment originally had two bedrooms, a study and an empty upper deck.

Today, it houses one master suite with a walk-in wardrobe, a handsome reading corner, an uninterrupted view that runs the length of the living space, and an entertaining room on the upper deck with an alfresco dining room fit for a luxury soiree.

Kenneth and Adrian replaced all the surface finishes with a cohesive material palette dominated by dark colours. The spatial layout was also tweaked to facilitate a smoother flow.

A feature wall finished in dark, large-format marble-look tiles from Hafary welcomes visitors arriving from the main entrance.

All the interior doors are made flush with its walls and camouflaged with the same finishes to create a clean look that highlights its stately 3.6-metre ceiling height.

The main entrance looks flush with the panelled wall that displays black and white photos of Kenneth’s wedding.

The kitchen and master suite doors are integrated into the sleek storage wall, finished with black Aptico anti-fingerprint laminates from EDL that also doubles as the TV wall.

Meanwhile, mirrored panels on the reading corner enlarge the visual perception of the space.

The new configuration maximises the apartment’s spectacular view. The floor-to-ceiling glass wall is outfitted with two layers of custom-ordered curtains, a sheer and an opaque one.

The sheer layer features a solid fabric trim on its bottom, up to the sofa’s height, so when the layer is closed, the view is framed nicely by the sheer upper part.

“Like creating a window effect, but with curtains,” says Adrian.

The opaque layer, meanwhile, creates an intimate ambient that highlights the sparkly elements of the space when it’s fully closed.

All the key furniture pieces and soft furnishing are custom-designed by Adrian and sourced worldwide.

The tapestry cowhide rugs were made in Thailand, while the curvy sofa and armchair were fabricated locally.

Here and there are the literal bling elements – the Swarovski buttons on the cushions, the decorative crystal inside the vessels, the crystal ring chandelier whose shape echoes the design of Kenneth and his partner’s wedding rings – that are strategically placed as the cherry on top of the luxe material palette.

The master bedroom features a wealth of textures. Adrian fills out the tall ceiling with a black chandelier and an equally tall bed headboard finished in white leather with a geometric pattern and black leather trim.

The wall behind it is panelled, with slanting depths that create a play of shadows. Cowhide rugs, cushions in sparkly, silky and woven materials, and embossed geometric wallpaper create a multi-sensorial experience.

The walk-in-wardrobe is encased in smoky dark glass.

Hung by a steel cable anchored to the ceiling in front of it is an original painting by Turkish artist Coplu, featuring a rainbow heart that makes for a cheerful counterpoint to the glamorously dark palette.

The striking master bathroom features marble- look tiles and artificial plants to lend a biophilic touch.

The balcony that wraps the apartment’s glass walls is finished in WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) decking, and so are the steps of the spiral staircase and the upper deck.

12/18

The lift to the deck opens up to a cosy sitting area populated with designer furniture.

13/18

Adrian built a new structure on this deck, which houses a canopied  outdoor dining area, and a cosy entertainment room encased in glass and gypsum board.

“This room is more informal,” says Adrian.

It does feature more bright colours and playful artwork and furniture, but it is no less stylish.

15/18

The room opens up to the spacious deck. Like in a bonafide resort, guests are provided with flip-flops to explore the outdoors.

“This floor’s aesthetic is Kenneth’s while the downstairs’ is mine,” shares Kenneth’s partner.

17/18

Other than the two, the apartment’s inhabitants include Elton, Cher, Madonna, Julia, George, Richard, and Long – trees housed in large planters that add a biophilic touch to the spectacular sunset view and a delightful conversation starter.

Kenneth and his partner moved in in November last year after a six-month-long renovation, which included two-month pandemic-related delays.

The result is worth the wait, as this home has become an oasis that offers the ultimate hospitality to inhabitants and their lucky guests.
