This two-storey semi-detached house in Tamarind Road was reconfigured for a family of four over a period of six months. Designed by Lim Ai Tiong of Lato Design, the house now features an additional attic and a whole new timber-style exterior.
The idea of a cuboid exterior was conceptualised in order to camouflage the protruding beams and columns on the previous exterior. For the cladding, the homeowner chose tiles that resembled timber. The resulting look is both contemporary yet rustic, complemented by full-height windows.
A large timber swing greets guests at the front porch. Specially chosen by the homeowner for his two children, the swing creates the perfect place for playing, reading, or taking a nap.
The kitchen features plenty of seating options, from an expansive breakfast bar to the spacious alfresco dining area overlooking the garden. The sliding glass doors positioned throughout the house let plenty of natural light in, further visually expanding the space.
A large tree dominates the space in the centre of the house, drawing the eye upward to the skylight that floods the home with natural light. This central space serves as an area for family gatherings, and also visually connects the different parts of the house.
To create a lighter, elegant look, Ai Tiong used frameless glass to replace the dated timber balustrade.
The newly-created attic hosts an entertainment room, a bar area and a balcony, which overlooks the estate and beyond.
