Today, the Ordinary launched the Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner to complement their affordable skincare line — “A Gentle, Milkier, way to Exfoliate” according to its website

The new Milky Toner seems to be an alternative to The Ordinary’s bestselling Glycolic Acid 7% Exfoliating Toner.

Prudvi Kaka, Chief Scientific Officer of The Ordinary, explains that "most exfoliating agents, like N-Acetyl Glucosamine (NAG) and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAS), work by targeting the adhesives that act as the glue holding the dead skin cells together.”

However, while AHAs break through these adhesion structures, NAG prevents them from sticking the dead skin cells to each other to begin with, allowing the dead skin to easily be exfoliated.”

N-Acetyl Glucosamine is the lead ingredient in the toner, and is fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, then combined with Squalene to produce the Milky Toner.

The resulting Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner is a gentle, non-acid based exfoliating toner that can be used twice a day. It can be used on all skin types to reduce dark spots and minimise pore visibility to smooth the skin, and should be applied after cleansing the skin, and before using serums.

Not so Ordinary

The parent company of The Ordinary, DECIEM was founded by Brandon Truaxe in 2013. Together with Co-Founder Nicola Kilner, Truaxe launched The Ordinary in 2016 to immediate popularity.

The focus of the brand is transparency and functionality. To ensure this vision is fulfilled, The Ordinary has a vertically integrated structure, with their own laboratory, manufacturing, e-commerce sites, retail stores and brand infrastructure. All their products are manufactured by the company itself.

Their focus on functionality can be seen in their products. Each product has minimal ingredients inside, and are named according to their main ingredient. Just look at their bestsellers, like their Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1, and Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA.

The in-house manufacturing, and minimal ingredients in each product allows them to have a low markup of price, which is why The Ordinary is such an affordable skincare brand.

The Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner retails at $31.00. As of today, it's only released on the ordinary's website. It will be available at all Sephora outlets, and the Escentials Paragon Outlet from the 22nd May. It will also be available on the Sephora, Escentials, and Zalora websites.
