Betting an astronomical sum may no longer be a figure of speech. Swedish jeweller and artist, Kristian Stahl, has hammered out discs from an 800,000-year-old meteorite and encased them in diamond-, ruby- and sapphire-encrusted, frames of white gold.

Says the designer: "The meteorite crashed into a remote part of northern Sweden, called Muonionalusta, almost one million years ago. The appeal and the challenge were too exciting to pass up." Stahl was looking to continue his success after a set of dice, hewn out of mammoth ivory, performed well in an auction a number of years ago.

The first meteorite poker set went under the hammer one day ago at a Christie's auction - exceeding it's projected sale price at S$313,000 - while it's unlikely there's enough left-over space rock for another set, Stahl's next projects are still fair game.
