Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore (APB) has partnered with Migrant Workers’ Center (MWC) as part of their new corporate social responsibility initiative, called ‘Worlds Together.’ Through this initiative, APB will be hosting three activities where Singaporeans and migrant workers will get the opportunity to get to know each other through shared activities and a shared meal.

About the partnership

APB Singapore is a local brewery known for producing beer brands like Tiger, Heineken, and Guinness. It was established in 1931 and is also a subsidiary of the HEINEKEN Company. This company focuses on sustainability, and has been adapting its brewing process to minimise the impact on the environment while maintaining their standards.

This initiative is part of APB Singapore’s sustainability goals, with a specific focus on the social aspect. Despite migrant workers contributing significantly to Singapore’s growth, they often face significant social challenges, such as limited social support and isolation.

To try and alleviate these issues, the non-governmental organisation, Migrant Workers' Center (MWC) was founded in 2009 with the goal of improving the wellbeing of migrant workers. It offers support through advocacy, crisis assistance, and educational resources, helping workers understand their rights and access essential services. MWC promotes fair employment practices and workplace safety while addressing issues like social integration and financial literacy. The centre aims to ensure migrant workers are treated fairly and respected, contributing to a more cohesive society in Singapore.

Patricia Lee, Corporate Affairs Director, Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore said: “Our partnership with MWC this year provides an invaluable opportunity to foster deeper understanding and inclusivity. We are committed to creating platforms where these profound conversations can happen and exemplify how businesses can contribute meaningfully to societal harmony.”

Ongoing initiative

The first event was held last Saturday, the 13th of October. Over 60 migrant workers and volunteers from APB and MWC came together for an afternoon of bowling and BBQ at the Civil Service Club @ Changi.

All the activities held within the Worlds Together initiative are co-created with migrant workers to ensure that their opinions and preferences were reflected in the activities that they chose.

One of the migrant workers on the planning committee, who is also an MWC Ambassador, Sumun Biswas said: “Being a part of ‘Worlds Together’ has made me feel like I am more than just a worker here. It’s a chance to share my story, my culture, and show Singaporeans who we are. I’m excited to meet new people, and I hope this is just the beginning of many friendships.”

With the next two events slated for next month. APB and MWC hope to engage more Singaporeans and corporate partners to contribute to the continuation of the Worlds Together initiative.

“‘Worlds Together’ brings to life the idea that inclusion is something we must all actively work toward,” reflected Michael Lim, Executive Director of MWC. “By partnering with Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore, we hope to create spaces where migrant workers feel valued, supported, and integrated into Singapore’s social fabric. Together, we can be the change that makes our society more open, welcoming, and united.”
