A dragon worthy of an emperor

Dominating the dial is an intricately hand-engraved dragon crafted from a solid block of 18-carat white gold. Every detail has been painstakingly sculpted by hand, from the individually engraved scales and flowing beard to the crest, claws, and expressive eyes, giving the mythical creature remarkable depth and vitality.

Importantly, Arnold & Son has remained faithful to traditional Asian symbolism. This is not the winged dragon of European folklore. Instead, it is a wingless Eastern dragon associated with water, rainfall, and prosperity. 

Even more significantly, it has five claws on each foot, a historical symbol reserved for the Chinese emperor, which reinforces the watch’s sense of rarity and prestige. The dragon coils gracefully around the dial, circling the off-centre white opal time display before extending its talons towards the moon in a frozen moment of pursuit.

The moon becomes the main event

While moon-phase complications are hardly uncommon in haute horlogerie, few command attention quite like the Luna Magna.

Instead of hiding behind a small aperture, the moon is presented as a rotating three-dimensional sphere measuring an impressive 12mm in diameter. Constructed from two hemispheres, one in verdite and the other in white gold, it recreates the waxing and waning of the lunar cycle with extraordinary realism.

The complication is also exceptionally precise. Arnold & Son has engineered the display to follow the lunar cycle so accurately that it requires correction by just one day every 122 years, provided the watch remains fully wound. Unlike many traditional moon-phase mechanisms, the display can also be adjusted directly via the crown, reflecting the manufacture’s complete control over the movement’s construction.

Verdite takes centre stage

Equally striking is Arnold & Son’s use of verdite, an ornamental stone rarely seen in fine watchmaking.

Chosen for its rich green hues and naturally flowing veins, each verdite dial possesses its own unique appearance. The same stone also forms one half of the spherical moon, visually linking the complication to the rest of the dial.

Contrasting against the verdite is Arnold & Son’s signature white opal hours-and-minutes display. Enhanced with Super-LumiNova, it emits a gentle glow in darkness, subtly echoing the radiance of moonlight while maintaining excellent legibility.

Everything is housed within a 44mm platinum case, giving the watch considerable wrist presence while underscoring its status as one of the manufacture’s flagship artistic creations. An imperial green alligator leather strap completes the colour palette inspired by the verdite stone.

Mechanical artistry beneath the sculpture

Powering the Luna Magna Platinum Dragon Verdite is Arnold & Son’s in-house manual-winding Calibre A&S1021.

Designed specifically around the oversized spherical moon, the movement delivers a 90-hour power reserve while operating at 3Hz. Through the sapphire case back, owners can admire the movement’s refined finishing, including radiating Côtes de Genève, chamfered bridges, circular satin-brushed wheels and polished blued screws.

The reverse side also houses a secondary moon-age display, allowing the astronomical moon phase to be set with exceptional precision. This thoughtful technical addition reinforces the Luna Magna’s credentials as more than simply an artistic showcase.
