Bovet Recital 30 Ceramic
The challenge of displaying accurate world time across different daylight saving periods took Bovet six years to solve. Its intelligent system uses 26 rollers and a central 24-hour dial to display 25 independent time zones, including New Delhi’s 30-minute offset.
A pusher switches between four seasonal timekeeping periods, automatically adjusting the corresponding city indications. The self-winding Calibre R30-70-001 beats at 4Hz and delivers a 62-hour power reserve.
Measuring 42mm, the latest Recital 30 introduces zirconia ceramic to Bovet’s watchmaking for the first time, offering greater scratch resistance and lighter wear.
A. Lange & Soehne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar “Lumen”
Combining a tourbillon with stop-seconds and an instantaneous perpetual calendar is already formidable. The German watchmaker goes further by making every indication luminous, including the peripheral month ring, outsize date, and moon-phase display.
On this 50-piece 41.9mm platinum watch, a semi-transparent dial lets ultraviolet light charge the luminous components beneath it while revealing the intricate calendar mechanism. The patented tourbillon stop-seconds mechanism enables precise time-setting.
Its self-winding Calibre L225.1 offers a 50-hour power reserve, wound by a white gold rotor with a platinum centrifugal mass.
Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Twin Beat Perpetual Calendar
How do you keep a perpetual calendar running for more than two months without winding? The patented Twin Beat system on this 42mm openworked platinum watch lets you switch between two regulating frequencies.
Active mode runs at 5Hz for optimal precision, delivering four days of power reserve, while Standby mode slows to 1.2Hz to conserve energy. Two independent gear trains and balance wheels ensure uninterrupted timekeeping during the transition.
Refinements to the hand-wound Calibre 3610 QP have extended its Standby autonomy to an extraordinary 70 days.
Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Chronographe Mysterieux
Imagine a chronograph that disappears when you don’t need it. Instead of conventional subdials, five coaxial hands on this 42mm stainless steel creation perform both timekeeping and chronograph functions. Pressing the monopusher at 7.30 sends three chronograph hands to 12 o’clock to measure elapsed hours, minutes, and seconds.
Press again to stop, and a third time to realign them with the current-time hands, hiding the complication behind a sophisticated triple-clutch system with one vertical and two horizontal clutches. The 362-component, self-winding Calibre PF053 beats at 4Hz and provides a 60-hour power reserve.
Patek Philippe Celestial Sunrise and Sunset Ref. 6105G-001
Five years of development and six patent applications have produced Patek Philippe’s first wristwatch, in 47mm white gold, displaying sunrise and sunset times for Geneva. Two cams rotate annually, with a 0.48mm-thick double feeler-spindle translating their contours into precise solar indications.
Another mechanism simultaneously adjusts civil time and sunrise/sunset displays for daylight saving changes. Three superposed transparent discs reproduce the apparent movements of the stars and moon, with the celestial disc completing one revolution every sidereal day.
The extremely precise moon-phase requires correction only once every 3,000 years.
Piaget Polo Minute Repeater
Piaget brings its expertise in ultra-thin chiming mechanisms to the Polo collection with the 9.30mm-thick minute repeater. Its self-winding Calibre 1290P packs 430 components into a movement equipped with a platinum micro-rotor and meticulously hand-polished hammers.
Extensive acoustic engineering produces chimes measuring 64 decibels, with three harmonic partials and a damping factor of 2,600. The partially openworked, hand-guilloche gold dial reveals the repeater’s inertia-wheel regulator at 4 o’clock.
Housed in a 48mm white gold case, the watch offers 30m water resistance, with only five numbered examples being produced this year.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Duometre Grande Complication A Grande Sonnerie
With 15 complications and 1,300 components, the maison’s re-engineered Calibre 182 is an extraordinary feat of miniaturisation. Four hammers striking four gongs reproduce Westminster chimes through Grande Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie, and minute repeater functions.
The first mode delivers 616 notes, equivalent to 7.5 hours of continuous chiming. Longer reshaped gongs and a titanium inner case further improve resonance. Its Duometre system separates the energy demands through two independent barrels and gear trains, preserving precision.
The movement on this 45mm pink gold piece also features a retrograde perpetual calendar and flying tourbillon.
Ferdinand Berthoud Chronometre FB 3SPC.4-1
Rather than piling on complications, this 42.3mm black ceramised titanium watch puts the most fundamental challenge of precision at the centre stage, measuring just 9.43mm thick. Its hand-wound Calibre FB-SPC features a cylindrical balance spring with two individually shaped terminal curves, each incorporating three bends.
This intricate geometry allows the spring to expand and contract concentrically, improving isochronism and earning COSC chronometer certification. The 230-component movement beats at 3Hz and provides a 72-hour power reserve. Hand-finishing is equally exacting, with 102 exterior and 15 inner angles.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon
Developed with creative duo Yoon Ahn and Verbal of fashion label AMBUSH, this 150-piece 38.5mm titanium Royal Oak Concept places a vivid red flying tourbillon at the centre of its mechanical expression.
Its specially developed hand-wound Calibre 2982 builds on the architecture of Calibre 2964, with a rotating tourbillon cage supported only from below to expose the regulating mechanism. The aluminium cage features an anodised red upper plate, a first for the maison, and completes one revolution per minute.
A partially openworked black aventurine dial reveals the movement’s energy flow.
