Following the launch of its first ladies’ automatic tourbillon two years ago, Vacheron Constantin now introduces the Traditionnelle Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin. Powered by the self-winding, manufacture Calibre 1120 QP, it houses the perpetual calendar high complication within an elegantly svelte case that is just 36.5mm in diameter and 8.43mm thick. It is available in pink or white gold, and is set with diamonds.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Rendez-Vous Star channels the romance and unpredictability of shooting stars. Thanks to a new mechanism and a three-layered dial, a shooting star powered by natural wrist movements arcs across the top of the dial at random at a frequency of about four to six times an hour. Best thing is, if you don’t want to leave things to chance, you can activate the star on demand by turning the crown several times.
While Bvlgari is known for its ultra-thin timepieces, its new ultra-small movement impressed us this year, too. Created for its ladies’ jewellery watches, the Piccolissimo hand-wound movement is just 12.3mm in diameter and 2.5mm thick. It debuted in the brand’s new Serpenti Misteriosi timepieces at LVMH Watch Week in January. Integrated with the time display, the movement is housed in the head of the bejewelled serpent, and can be easily removed for servicing.

Cartier launched a new cushion-shaped jewellery watch family this year with the Coussin de Cartier and, boy, did the luxury house put an unusual spin on this case style. Two limited editions are housed in an elongated, flexible cushion case. Paved with diamonds or coloured gemstones, it is made of a fine gold mesh that allows the case to return to its original form after being squished.
Certain flowers open and close at different times of the day. That’s the natural phenomenon Van Cleef & Arpels has beautifully replicated, using a mechanical movement, on the Lady Arpels Heures Florales. At the top of every hour, flowers on the dial pop open to indicate the time — the number of blooms that open correspond to the hour. The minutes, on the other hand, are shown via a retrograde display on the side of the watch.
