While discerning consumers have always prioritised authenticity and provenance as much as beauty and craftsmanship, tracing the lineage of big-ticket acquisitions from the secondary market inadvertently come with challenges. Thankfully, major luxury players are increasingly harnessing technology to ensure customer confidence and engagement, especially during a time when counterfeit goods are flooding the market.

Launched in 2018, Bvlgari Touch app first served the needs of verifying the maison’s bags (via each item’s NFC tag), and this service was then extended to its watch offerings (via a data matrix engraved on the caseback) in 2020. Now, in a world’s first, Bvlgari high jewellery creations can be authenticated via inscribed serial numbers as small as 0.7mm. More than a convenience, such a service is simply a necessity today.

With a simple scan, clients will unlock a Bvlgari Digital Passport that offers full traceability and transparency on the products, their components, and craftsmanship, as well as access to aftercare and other exclusive content. A test on our smartphone demonstrates how quick and easy it is: The app provides instructions on where and how to scan a jewel’s unique ID depending on its category (bracelet, necklace, ring, earrings, or brooch).

Developed in collaboration with Italian software boutique Dev4Side, the Connected Jewels platform is powered by advanced OCR (Optical Character Recognition), AI, and computer vision — linking each piece to a secure digital ledger.

It integrates seamlessly into the Bvlgari Touch application, centralising product-related services such as care, trade marketing, clienteling, and boutique operations into one fluid intelligent system. It was first unveiled during Bvlgari’s Polychroma High Jewellery event in Taormina, Sicily, this May, and showcased at the recently concluded VivaTech 2025 in Paris.

“We are redefining what innovation means in the world of high jewellery,” says Bvlgari CEO Jean-Christophe Babin. “This initiative is a powerful reflection of our ability to evolve through research and development, while remaining steadfast in our commitment to sustainability and client-centricity. Bvlgari is currently the only luxury brand that connects not only its jewellery but also its luxury watches and bags, and continues to lead with pioneering creations that not only embody aesthetic excellence, but also enrich the lives of those who wear them.”

More than a safeguard against forgery, Connected Jewels also enhances product longevity and customer education. Clients receive tailored maintenance reminders, gemstone care tips, and access to virtual archives of Bvlgari’s heritage collections.
