The Coolest Fountain Pen Goes To: Richard Mille's RMS05

There is no end to the extravagant marvel that mechanical watchmaking can be, but even we have to admit that a fountain pen with a watch-inspired movement borders on the needlessly insane. Thanks to Richard Mille – a brand synonymous with statement watches as flamboyant as they are pricey – such a pen exists: the RMS05.

It made its debut at the recent Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie earlier this year, alongside an extra-thin tonneau-shaped automatic watch, and one made in partnership with Airbus Corporate Jet. While these two tickers are respectable novelties in their own right, we can safely assume that neither can steal the show from a pen that uses a recoil escapement to deploy its golden nib.

The RMS05 spent four years in development and will continue a limited-production run. It will be available at all Richard Mille boutiques for the fantastic price of US$105,000 ($149,000). Here’s what you’re paying for.
