Grand Seiko partners Shohei Ohtani: Why this global move matters, even if you don’t follow baseball

Grand Seiko has announced a global partnership with baseball superstar Shohei Ohtani, one of the most remarkable athletes in the world. Beginning today, this collaboration is part of the brand’s Grand Moments Project, which reflects a shared philosophy grounded in a deep respect for the value of time and a commitment to approaching each moment with sincerity.
Both Grand Seiko and Shohei Ohtani, a designated hitter and pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball, share the belief that sustained effort ultimately shapes the future. Guided by this vision, they approach time with intention, refining it through disciplined, consistent pursuit of their respective crafts.
Says Ohtani commented, “To carry forward a part of Grand Seiko’s heritage, shaped through decades of dedication, is something I deeply value. Feeling that legacy as I wear the watch brings me real joy, and it is my hope that we will continue this journey together.”
Reflecting on the idea of refining time, he adds, “Elevating the quality of each moment is important. At the same time, the sustained pursuit of excellence is equally essential. Both truly matter.”
At first glance, a baseball partnership may not immediately resonate in Singapore, but this move goes far beyond sport. It brings together two distinctly Japanese forces that have steadily built global respect and influence — one in watchmaking, the other in modern athletics.
A once-in-a-generation athlete
To understand why this matters, it helps to first understand who Ohtani is. In Major League Baseball, players typically specialise in one role: they are either pitchers, who throw the ball, or hitters, who bat.
Ohtani does both, and he does both at an elite level. That alone sets him apart. It is something that has not been consistently seen since the legendary Babe Ruth, and even then, comparisons only go so far given the demands of the modern game.
Today, Ohtani is widely regarded as a once-in-a-generation talent. Nicknamed “Shotime”, he is a multiple-time MVP, one of the highest-paid athletes in the world, and a rare figure who commands attention and admiration across both Japan and the United States. In other words, he is a global cultural figure.
Grand Seiko transcends borders
For Grand Seiko, the partnership is as much about philosophy as it is about visibility. The brand has long emphasised rigour, precision, and the idea that excellence is built over time. That same mindset is reflected in Ohtani’s approach to his craft.
There is also a strategic reason to this move. While Grand Seiko has earned deep respect among collectors, it has traditionally maintained a relatively low profile compared to its Swiss counterparts. Partnering with Ohtani signals a more assertive global stance, particularly in the United States, where baseball remains deeply embedded in culture and where Ohtani is one of the sport’s biggest names.
What makes this partnership natural is that it does not bank on spectacle. Ohtani is known for being intensely focused and private, qualities that mirror Grand Seiko’s own understated approach. This is not a celebrity endorsement built on flash, but one grounded in shared values.
Even for audiences who do not follow baseball, the significance of this partnership is clear. It marks a moment where Grand Seiko steps further into the global spotlight, backed by a figure who embodies discipline, consistency, and long-term mastery.
And in many ways, that is what this story is really about — not sport, not just an ambassadorship, but the joint pursuit of excellence over time.
