Hermes' latest window display is a crocheted underwater dream world

Hermes' window displays have always featured a sense of whimsy, and it's no different for their latest one. This time, they're featuring 35-year-old Indonesian artist Mulyana, who is based out of  Yogyakarta, and work primarily with crocheting and knitting. Works begin — much like how coral grows — as a singular unit, growing and sprawling organically outwards to form sculptural vignettes.

For Mulyana, crocheting is both medium and meditation — the idea of repeating actions over and over again to work towards some kind of artistic, spiritual goal.

For Hermes' latest artist window installation, Mulyana has created a piece titled Irama (Rhythm), a coral dreamscape imagined as a home for his alter-ego, the Mogus — a portmanteau of "Monster", "Gurita" (Octopus) and 'Sigarantang" (a clan name that Mulyana has given the Mogus).

Mulyana has also envisioned Irama as a musical composition, with each stitch in the crochet a musical note, sharing, “Because the success of a rhythm will always be remembered and sung. Just like a dream, it will always be remembered until it can be realized.”

Among the crocheted coral rests pieces from Hermes' collection, like undersea treasures waiting to be discovered: a pair of Quicker white sneakers with the Calèche Vitesse and iconic H print, a men’s cap and a Toodoo pochette, and the Bolide 45.

Irama (Rhythm) will be on display until 21 May 2019 at Hermès Liat Towers, 541 Orchard Road.
