How Stephen Hawking’s black hole theories inspired the Bremont Supernova Hawking

If any contemporary figure deserves a watch to his name, it is Stephen Hawking (1942-2018). Few scientists have transformed humanity’s understanding of the universe quite like the late British theoretical physicist, whose groundbreaking work on black holes, space, and time fundamentally reshaped modern cosmology. 

Yet Hawking’s influence extended far beyond academia. His bestselling A Brief History of Time introduced millions to some of science’s most complex ideas, while appearances on The Simpsons, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and The Big Bang Theory turned him into one of the world’s most recognisable scientists. 

It is therefore fitting that Bremont has once again turned to the late physicist for inspiration. 

The British watchmaker’s new Supernova Hawking Limited Edition is its second collaboration with the Hawking family, but the first to reinterpret his legacy through the lens of the brand’s futuristic Supernova collection, where space exploration theme and advanced engineering take centre stage.

Introduced earlier this year, the Supernova collection represents Bremont’s boldest design evolution to date, taking inspiration from spacecraft architecture, orbital technology, and the engineering challenges of space exploration. 

Inspired by Stephen Hawking’s black hole theories

Diagnosed with motor neurone disease (ALS) at just 21 years old and initially given only a few years to live, Hawking defied medical expectations for more than five decades. During that time, he reshaped our understanding of the universe, producing groundbreaking work that bridged quantum mechanics, gravity, and thermodynamics.

Among his most influential discoveries was Hawking radiation, which proposed that black holes are not completely black. Instead, they emit radiation, possess a temperature, and gradually lose mass over immense timescales. 

The theory fundamentally altered how physicists viewed black holes and remains one of the defining achievements of 20th-century theoretical physics. And Bremont has incorporated his scientific legacy throughout the watch.

How the Bremont Supernova Hawking interprets the science

The 41mm case is crafted from ultra-black DLC-coated 904L stainless steel, while the sharply faceted black ceramic bezel and angular architecture evoke the immense gravitational forces and distorted geometry associated with black holes. 

The dial is equally thoughtful. A three-dimensional galvanic pattern references spacecraft solar arrays, drawing the eye towards two chronograph sub-dials fashioned from genuine meteorite. Because each meteorite section has its own naturally occurring crystalline structure, each watch has a subtly unique appearance.

Positioned above the date display at six o’clock is perhaps the model’s most meaningful detail: Hawking’s name alongside the famous black hole entropy equation tied to his pioneering research on the thermodynamics of black holes. It transforms a scientific formula into an integral design element rather than a decorative flourish.

Turning the watch over continues the story. The sapphire exhibition caseback features a swirling black hole motif surrounding the movement, creating the impression of looking into the cosmic phenomenon that defined Hawking’s career.

Powering the watch is Bremont’s chronometer-rated BC77 automatic movement, operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 62-hour power reserve. The watch also measures 14.4mm thick and offers 100m of water resistance. 

Buyers can choose between an integrated DLC-coated steel bracelet or a black rubber strap, both fitted with quick-release mechanisms for easy changes. Production is limited to 600 pieces worldwide.
