What makes this distinctive Montblanc pen worth $625,000?

When a pen collector purchases a half a-million-dollar writing instrument that is made of gold and covered in precious stones, chances are it will be more showcased than used. Good thing for such individuals, then, that Montblanc’s latest premium creations come with a detachable objet d’art that can be worn every day. Costing 400,000 euros (S$645,000) each, the fountain pens in the spider themed High Artistry Heritage Metamorphosis collection have an ornamental arachnid on the cap. Each is made of solid gold and features gemstones – the white-gold piece features a spider with a 0.62-carat diamond “body” and diamond-studded legs. This can be removed from its bejewelled perch and worn as a brooch, tiepin or bangle – just clip it to the jewellery attachments included in the set. Elegant yet edgy, the spider will be recognised by people in the know. And that’s the point, isn’t it?
