Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional gets a long-awaited update

After serving the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional for about 50 years, the Calibre 1861 has retired. For fans, it was only a matter of time. The good news: the new-generation Moonwatch is now powered by the Master Chronometer-certified Co-Axial Calibre 3861 that’s highly resistant to magnetic fields and incredibly precise.

With the Moonwatch having enjoyed such massive success over the decades, Omega knows better than to fix what ain’t broke. From the black dial and tachymeter to the hands, indices and chronograph indicators and pushers, its replacement looks strikingly similar to the soon-to-be- discontinued original.

The actual changes are considerably subtle. The bracelet is new, refined and inspired by earlier Speedmaster models and there is a “dot over 90” bezel – literally a dot over the 90 on the bezel instead of its side, a detail found on pre-1970 Speedmasters.

The new Moonwatch is now also available in Sedna Gold or Canopus gold, Omega’s rose gold and white gold alloys respectively.
