Tweed, a Chanel signature, is reimagined into light and supple jewels

For Gabrielle Chanel, it was the rugged beauty of Scotland that transformed this utilitarian material into a fashion icon. Now, the Tweed de Chanel High Jewelry Collection carries this legacy forward, weaving its comfort and elegance into an entirely new realm of opulence.

In the 1920s, the mademoiselle became besotted with Scotland — especially its breathtaking landscapes and aristocratic traditions — during her sojourns there with her lover, the Duke of Westminster. Inspired by the textures and patterns of the duke’s fine tweed jackets that she borrowed, she redefined the fabric for her couture creations.

Today, this same inventive spirit informs the mademoiselle’s audacious reinterpretation of tweed — not in wool, but in a shimmering tapestry of gold, diamonds, and precious stones. And the visionary behind this is the maison’s Fine Jewelry Creation Studio director, Patrice Leguereau.

His aspiration? To craft a “fabric of precious stones” that mirrors the suppleness and intricacy of tweed. First realised in 2020, the debut Tweed de Chanel collection unveiled 45 exceptional pieces that artfully captured the essence of the woven textile. Today, Leguereau pushes the boundaries further with 63 new creations, each a poetic tribute to the interplay of texture, movement, and light.

At the heart of this collection lies an extraordinary craftsmanship that blurs the line between haute couture and high jewellery. Using innovative settings and minuscule articulations in gold and platinum, Chanel’s master artisans have managed to achieve an astonishing suppleness.

The pieces ripple with movement, evoking the fluidity of fabric while maintaining the structural integrity of exceptionally made jewels. The play of openwork and layering mimics tweed’s rich texture, while the meticulous placement of gemstones imbues the designs with unparalleled brilliance.

The collection unfolds in five thematic chapters, each inspired by symbols cherished by Coco Chanel. A white ribbon evokes purity and elegance, while a pink camellia — her favourite flower — channels absolute femininity. The comet, set against a deep blue backdrop, captures the wonder of the cosmos, while a radiant yellow sun symbolises life and energy. Finally, the lion, the mademoiselle’s astrological sign, roars in majestic red hues. These motifs appear either subtly nestled within clasps or as striking focal points on necklaces, bracelets, and brooches.

Chanel’s vision extends to the very construction of the pieces. The back of each creation is as carefully considered as its front, ensuring a softness and comfort reminiscent of tweed’s famed cosiness. This dedication to detail transforms each jewel into a wearable masterpiece — airy yet substantial, delicate yet powerful.
