Alco-tourism is on the rise. For the jet-setting barfly, hitting any city’s most exalted cocktail bars is an essential part of any itinerary. The pandemic though, has thrown a wrench into all travel plans. As a balm for the thirsty and travel-deprived, MO Bar at Mandarin Oriental has launched a series of virtual guest shifts featuring some of the most forward cocktail bars in the Asia.
Fresh from its debut on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2020 (A50B) list at number 46, MO bar has teamed up with regional players like Bangkok’s Vesper — 11th on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars — and Bar Cham, and Alice Cheongdam from South Korea.
Just like any virtual guest shift, participating bars will be offering their signature cocktails, with MO Bar’s guys recreating these drinks with instructions and recipes from their bar of origin.
From Bar Cham comes the Goodbye Sadness, a mix of peanut butter fat-washed cachaca, hazelnut, and passionfruit. Meanwhile, Alice Cheongdam has presented the Bonkey Monkey, a tropical party of rum, pineapple honey, banana coffee, and coconut. While the guest shift of these two bars are over, the cocktails are still available from MO Bar’s online store for takeaway.
The guest shift from three Manila bars – Back Room, The Curator, Agimat, and Spirits Library – has also just ended, so look out for the upcoming takeaway cocktails.
Upcoming shifts will feature the Japanese-inspired Irusu Lounge from Ho Chi Minh, as well as ROOM by Le Kief, a molecular gastronomy-led Taipei bar that’s 27th on the A50B list. More bars will be announced in the following weeks.
Guest bars will also be offering MO Bar’s signature from its Volume Two menu in their respective countries – the menu has been formulated from the MO Bar team’s travels in 2019, where they explored the markets, produce, and bars of Southeast Asia.
