Every bottle by this whisky maker tells a story – one carefully crafted through generations of dedicated hands and time-honoured traditions.

At The Balvenie, the devotion to handcrafted whisky runs deep, where personal relationships flourish and every detail is treasured, resulting in whiskies of distinctive character.

Each narrative emerges from the masterful touch of skilled craftsmen, their expertise evident in every traditional method – from the home-grown barley to the historic floor maltings that still operate today.

It is this unwavering dedication to craft that imbues each whisky with the spirit and artistry of those who brought it to life.

Personal relationships also mean a lot to the brand and it was the close friendship between The Balvenie’s malt master Kelsey McKechnie, and warehouse and samples coordinator George Paterson that inspired A Collection of Curious Casks, a series of three single malt whiskies.

The collection consists of a 14-Year-Old American Bourbon Barrel, a 17-Year-Old New Spanish Oak Cask and an 18-Year-Old French Pineau Cask.

From curiosity to creation: The birth of A Collection of Curious Casks

A Collection of Curious Casks is part of The Balvenie’s Stories range, which was first launched in 2019, highlighting the unique tales of the people behind the whiskies. Ten expressions now make up the Stories range.

McKechnie and Paterson have been working together for years, sharing their passion for whisky-making.

Paterson spends his days in the warehouses, tasting and monitoring casks, looking for those rare finds that might otherwise go unnoticed.

“A true highlight for me is being able to identify the hidden gems, casks that are doing the unexpected and bring to life the conversations about them,” he enthuses.

These “hidden gems” inspire McKechnie to create unique expressions that showcase the incredible flavours that can emerge from innovative cask selection.

On their partnership, she says: “It is an honour to collaborate with talented craftspeople like George each and every day, a man who dedicates his time and craft to shepherding our casks to distinction and bringing our liquid to life.”

The expressions of tradition and craftsmanship

What can whisky enthusiasts expect from this collection?

14-Year-Old American Bourbon Barrel

When the 14-Year-Old American Bourbon Barrel is poured, you are immediately greeted by an inviting aroma – think velvety sweetness with rich toffee and hints of smouldering oak.

There is also a refreshing burst of citrus and a honey musk that makes you want to take your first sip right away.

On the palate, you will find candied orange peel mingling beautifully with earthy flavours from roasted malt and deep vanilla oakiness.

The finish? Long and lingering – perfect for savouring.

The story here is that this was supposed to be bottled as a 12-year-old single barrel. But a surprising note of smokiness somehow infused the spirit and ended up complementing the strong character of the bourbon casks.

17-Year-Old New Spanish Oak Cask

The 17-Year-Old New Spanish Oak Cask, on the other hand, offers a completely different experience. Originally distilled in 2005, it was transferred to unseasoned Spanish oak butts four years later after maturing in traditional whisky casks.

As you take in its aroma, you will notice deep earthy notes from fresh oak alongside delicate floral tones and an explosion of sweetness that dances on your senses.

When you taste it, there is a delightful balance between entwined honey and a hint of sherbet zing from the new wood – all underpinned by toffee and cinnamon spiciness.

Just like its American sibling expression, it boasts a long finish that keeps you coming back for more.

18-Year-Old French Pineau Cask

And there is also the 18-Year-Old French Pineau Cask. From your first sip, it captivates your palate with warming amber tones from toasted oak mixed with delicate spice notes and smooth butterscotch.

Hints of ripe berries add an intriguing twist. As you continue to sip, layers of spice and rich sweetness unfold on creamy vanilla and honey before revealing gentle oaky tannins that linger delightfully.

Fun fact: French pineau casks were originally part of an experiment by malt master David C. Stewart.

When McKechnie took the helm, she decided to let the batch mature for another eight years, resulting in this expression that showcases the influence of time and Stewart’s pioneering spirit.

Giving the gift of time

With the gifting season well underway, The Balvenie’s A Collection of Curious Casks makes for an exceptional choice.

Each bottle not only represents high-quality craftsmanship but also embodies stories that bring the distillery, its history and craft, and the whisky’s makers to life. Gifting a bottle – or all three – from this collection conveys thoughtfulness and appreciation for artisanal spirits.

With beautifully designed packaging – each bottle showcases an artwork by British print artist Andy Lovell – the collection stands out as a luxurious gift.

Imagine presenting a friend, loved one or business associate with the American Bourbon Barrel, the New Spanish Oak Cask or the French Pineau Cask – each sip will surely transport them into the heart of Speyside’s storied whisky-making heritage, making this holiday season an extra memorable one for them.
